Abstract

This Introduction to the special issue Well-Staged Syllables. From Classical to Early Modern English Metres in Drama discusses ways in which early modern English drama received and reinvented the classical legacy of Greek and Latin metres with a special attention to lyric forms. It illustrates various approaches, from imitation to emulation, to processes of confluence of different continental and English traditions.
